Mesa bungalow

A 1924 bungalow near Shoreline Park. We built oak shelves either side of the fireplace for a lifetime of books and found two sage armchairs at a dealer in Ojai.

The brief

Diane had four thousand books in boxes and a living room with one small bookcase. She wanted to read by the fire and keep her grandmother's writing desk in the study next door.

What we did

White oak shelving either side of the plaster fireplace, with picture lights set into the top rail. A slipcovered linen sofa that can be washed, two reupholstered armchairs in a sage wool and a coffee table low enough to put your feet on.

What changed

Every book is out of its box. The desk went back into the study with new felt on the writing surface and nothing else changed about it.

“They designed around my grandmother's desk instead of talking me out of it.”

Start with two hours at your house

A designer walks every room with you, measures, listens, and sends written notes the same week. The visit is $450, and it comes off your design fee if we go on to work together.
